Energy Drinks… a big no no!

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

I admit to being a drinker of Red Bull and other horrible energy drink products. I am not even sure that it does indeed increase my energy or help me stay awake, but in my head it tells me that I have at lease 2 hours of more awake/work time than I normally would. I know that many students are the same and grab a Red Bull when they have extra studying to do or a final assignment to hand in, even though we know it is not good for us. Relating back to Lucy’s blog about feeding your brain…  I don’t think Red Bull lands on the list!

A recent article from the Globe and Mail discusses this further:

Energy Drinks are BAD!

Do you drink energy drinks?

So come September when that urge for Red Bull hits, try and look for something else… green tea maybe? There are always alternatives to these chemical based drinks!

I will try to not drink them if you will!

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Wanting to share with you a great local success story: Michique handbags!

Handbag display at the NSCCD Craft Market

Love these bags! Sourced from : "I LOVE MICHIQUE HANDBAGS" on facebook

I spent the weekend in Halifax and attended the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design’s craft market. I knew Michique would be there and headed over to find their booth. There was a mass of people crowded around the Michique booth, all admiring and most importantly purchasing these creative and wonderful purses. With other Canadian craft shows scheduled for their upcoming year I know Michique will reach all corners of Canada and beyond very quickly.

It is great to see local sisters, pursuing their talent and finding success in a product they have put so much into. For all of those entrepreneurial driven students at CBU check out Michique and let it motivate you to follow your dreams!

Caution CBU Ladies: They are so pretty !!

Summertime on fast forward?

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Summertime in Cape Breton  is a popular time for weddings. Right now my life is being consumed with my sister’s wedding. I am in charge of many things and find the time flying by and the big day getting closer. It is already the 12th of July!

As I have spent a lot of time preparing for this wedding, I know many students are preparing for their return back to school. I recently received a letter in the mail informing me about class registration for the fall, but in the midst of name tags and seating charts I was unable to check out my options as of yet.

A Cup of Conversation

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Coffee has secret powers… Other than the obvious power of giving us a little energy surge when needed, like when prepping for a big exam or studying all night,  coffee has strong powers in enhancing communication.

The immediate reaction for me when I sit down with someone, cup in hand, is of relaxation and the desire to talk, discuss and ponder my life and that of my caffeinated partner.

The warmth of the cup delivers a deep sigh of quiet contemplation and the conversation takes flight. Work, relationships, education, recipes, fashion – no topic is off limits.

Once the cup has been emptied and enjoyed, I am back to my busy mind but feel more refreshed. It is the coffee’s secret power in communication that brings me back to it and keeps me seeking for more coffee partners! Who wants a cup?

Pool Leisure

Friday, June 25th, 2010

After the busy school months, the murky waters of my backyard swamp slowly begin to clear into a beautiful blue paradise and I am reminded of the joys of summer pool leisure.  The stores are beginning  to sell ridiculous yet desirable pool toys and floaters and I am doing my sunscreen inventory. Lazy days by the pool with friends are a staple of my summers. Although pool days are relaxing there is a strict schedule that one must follow: tan, swim, tan, swim, eat bbq and repeat. Yes I know, very strenuous but, I think that all the hard work we students do during school months allow this kind of schedule. If you are taking summer courses make sure to give yourself at least one day off for pool leisure days. You can thank me later.

Best way to cool off

Green Thumb

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

During this time of the year I find myself driven crazy over weeds and find it imparative to get out and tidy my home’s garden. Not only does it get me out in the fresh air and sun to work on my tan (while wearing sunscreen of corse), but it makes me very excited as I bring order to what was once so unappealing. When Cape Breton’s vegetation comes into full bloom it is so beautiful and lush.

My Garden

Being from a design background, I look at the garden as a canvas and enjoy working in this medium very much. Get outside today, you might surprise yourself with an enjoyment for gardening . Maybe there should be a CBU gardening club… anyone interested?

Crafting… It’s cool again.

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I may have mentioned before of ways to pass the lazy summer hours, but I must continue to add to this list as my love for crafting continues to grow. Crafting, is cool again… if you didn’t know.

Crafting today has evolved. Craft experimentation can lead you down a paint, marker or even pipe cleaner path, yet to be explored and rethinking old techniques can help you see and use them in new ways…A paper gift card made with different materials, for example. Both help me to keep an open mind and stretch my creative brain muscles a little bit.

Ahoy Inspiration

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Sydney’s Port is full of hustle and bustle this week. The yachts of the 2010 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race are an exciting and interesting sight. These talented people have come so far and worked so hard. I find watching these yachts and crews very inspiring, it makes me think …. “You can do anything if you put your mind to it.”

I know I have mentioned the Wentworth Perk in my past music blog, but I felt that it needed its own blog. This newish coffee shop in town has been doing exceptionally well. From their decor to their entertainment and most importantly their COFFEE!
