Let’s Go CAPERS!

Friday, March 4th, 2011

This past weekend, both the men and women’s Capers basketball teams finished on top of the AUS standings, heading into the 2011 Subway AUS championship in Halifax and St. Johns, NFLD, this coming weekend.

For this weekend, CBU will be facing off to try and become the AUS champions, once again.  There will be many students and staff (including myself) venturing to Halifax to cheer on our Capers as they try for the title.

If you can’t make the trip to Halifax and St. Johns, or just have too much homework to do, Eastlink will be broadcasting the games live on your respective Eastlink channel, and online!

Hopefully when I get back I’ll have some great stories on how everything went down and how the Orange Army rocked the Metro Center.  Until then, GO CAPERS GO!

Sharing the Orange Army Sprit

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

We all know about the amazing varsity teams that we have here at CBU, including basketball, soccer and volleyball, but they are not the only sports teams that represent our school.  CBU also has three club teams: men’s baseball, men’s rugby, and women’s hockey.  Just because these teams are not recognized as much as the varsity teams doesn’t mean that you cannot go out and cheer them on; because come on now, everyone likes support!

So the following is some information on our amazing club teams, who also need some Orange Army sprit at their games!

Looking to play?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

I’ve always loved playing sports, no matter how poor I can be at them. It’s a great time to exercise, flex your competitive side, and to get out and socialize.  While winter sports aren’t necessarily my thing (my balance is way too poor for anything snow or ice covered!) I do love playing basketball, soccer and volleyball whenever I get the chance.

Although I’m away, I recently became aware of a volleyball league starting up at our very own CBU! The games will take place on the two new beach volleyball courts located right by the track on campus. Because of everyone’s busy schedule in the summer, it’s been decided that games will take place on Tuesday evenings at 6pm, after work or class.

At the moment, Caper volleyball player Janine Muise is trying to organize teams of four (male or female) to commit to playing games, and some possible tournaments during the summer. So far, many people have shown interest and the league is quickly growing and will certainly be a lot of fun. Plus, you can meet some new friends and play around outside after being stuck inside all day.

For more information on the league (that is always accepting new players!) join the Facebook group at: You can also email Janine for more information at

Now get to work on your spike and dive, and see you there soon!

Looking Back

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

It’s hard to believe it is already April. The majority of the school year, aside from our looming exams, has flown past us once again. The spring is soon to appear and organizing of summer plans is well in progress. Enjoy this movie highlighting the past year’s events, accompanied by the song “I Call Cape Breton My Home ©”, sung by our very own Student Union President Ricky McCarthy.

Working on the Student Body

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

As everyone departs for the basketball games in Ottawa, I can’t help but reflect on my “student body.” CBU has an amazing athletics program that has been entertaining to watch, and exciting to be a part of. This connection to sports is nice, but we really can’t get involved beyond cheering and dawning bright orange in support of our teams.

And they’re off!

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

The Crew taking part in “Operation Paint Ottawa Orange” left this morning for their 18 hour trek to Ottawa! The group was in great spirits and ready to cheer on the Capers! Look for them in tomorrow’s Cape Breton Post and also listen for them on 101.9 the Giant as they do remote updates from Ottawa. GO CAPERS!

ALL Aboard!

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

There is a bus load of orange fanatics heading to cheer on the Capers at the Men’s AUS championship this coming Thursday morning! If interested you should head on over to the Students’ Union building to sign up and get more details. At a cost of $125, including bus, hotel, and game tickets it is not a bad deal at all for a memory that will most likely become one of the highlights of your CBU University career.  Sign up to join the orange army as they take Ottawa by storm.

CBU students line up to buy their way to Ottawa and possibly a victory!
